Mother Nhu Monument – A Symbol of Heroism in the Heart of Da Nang

Tatinta is honorable to accompany you in exploring one of the sacred historical symbols of Da Nang city – the Mother Nhu Monument. This place not only marks a heroic historical chapter but also honors the indomitable spirit, patriotism, and noble sacrifices of a heroic mother, Mrs. Le Thi Danh, also known as Mother Nhu.

Location and Historical Significance of the Monument

The Mother Nhu Monument is located on Dien Bien Phu Boulevard, heading towards the center of Da Nang. The monument is strategically placed at the city's gateway from Hue Junction, where thousands of vehicles pass by daily. Standing here, visitors can feel the solemn atmosphere and the sacred significance of the monument, a symbol of gratitude to those who have dedicated and sacrificed for the nation's freedom.

This mother was Le Thi Danh, from Thanh Khe village, now Thanh Khe Dong ward, Thanh Khe district, Da Nang. During the resistance war against the US, she not only sheltered cadres but also organized the transportation of food, dug secret tunnels, and sacrificed her life in her home during a historic battle. Her heroic sacrifice is not only a source of pride for the people of Thanh Khe but also an endless inspiration for future generations.

The Legendary Battle of Thanh Khe

The historical story associated with Mother Nhu occurred in December 1968. At that time, she used her own home as a shelter for the special forces. After an ambush on the Phu Loc security post, the soldiers returned to hide in Mother Nhu's house and the adjacent house of Mother Hien. However, due to betrayal, the enemy unexpectedly surrounded them. When tortured and forced to reveal the hidden place of the soldiers, Mother Nhu steadfastly refused to submit. Facing the enemy's harshly, she shouted: "It's a betrayal, my sons! Fight!" She was shot dead in her house immediately after. Despite the great loss, thanks to her call, the special forces fought bravely, killing more than 80 American and puppet soldiers, causing a significant impact. The battle lasted all day, with the enemy forces being 80 times larger, including a battalion of US Marines. But with indomitable spirit and the help of the Thanh Khe people, the soldiers withdrew safely.

The Mother Nhu Monument – A Masterpiece from War Relics

After Da Nang was liberated, the city authorities decided to erect a monument to commemorate Mother Nhu. In 1985, sculptor Pham Van Hang used 7,000 bomb and shell casings collected from all over Da Nang to create a nearly 12-meter-high statue. This is a masterpiece that carries both artistic value and profound meaning, emphasizing future generations of the horrors of war and the undying patriotism. The special aspect of Mother Nhu’s statue is its design, which depicts her in a waving stance, calling out a battle cry. Her face is turned towards the Da Nang sea, embodying the spirit of guidance and protection for the nation's heroic children. In front of the monument is Dung Si Thanh Khe street, named to honor the brave who fought in the historic battle soldiers.

Mother Nhu Memorial Area

Today, Mother Nhu's house has been renovated into the Mother Nhu Memorial Area, a must-visit destination in Da Nang.
