Profile
The Document Center has been built on the historic site of the former "Brown House", which was once the headquarters of the Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP). The Munich City Council wanted the architecture of the building to carry a concept related to the special historical significance of the place it was built on. Therefore, the architecture of the building and the design of the outdoor area are meant to mark a fundamental break with the history of the site and the Nazi buildings in the neighborhood. Long vertical glass windows are interspersed across the building's floors, allowing diverse visual connections to Nazi construction sites to make the building itself part of the document.
More than just presenting a collection of Nazi documents, it focuses on the history of anti-Semitism, anti-racism, and the different forms they could take to distinguish. The center's white walls and dormant library-like atmosphere reflect the seriousness of the materials on display. The exhibitions are almost entirely based on written records, so around the Document Center there are many chairs equipped so that visitors can comfortably sit and study.
