Located in the heart of Anping district, Tait & Co Headquarters (Old Tait & Co Merchant House) used to be under the management of Tait & Co Trading, a British company established. in 1867, and this is also among the top 5 trading companies in Anping area during the period when Taiwan has just opened to international trade activities.
Has undergone several changes since its inception. Tait & Co was one of the foreign trading companies favored by the Qing Dynasty allowed to operate before the War until the Japanese colonization of Taiwan, specializing in the import and export of camphor, sugar, and tea. During the Japanese colonial rule of Taiwan, opium and camphor were administered exclusively by the Japanese government, leading to the decline of foreign companies with the exception of Tait & Co. The company had a big change in 1911, when all foreign companies in Anping closed, the Japanese government transformed it into a salt production and export company. At that time, this place was used as the office of Tainan Salt Company.
The house has been classified as a Grade Three historical site of Taiwan. A colonial structure with 2 floors and a main staircase in the central lobby, the house is painted white, different from other traditional Hokkien style buildings in the area. The ground floor is a dormitory for workers with a central walkway with 3 rooms on each side. The second floor has the same design as the ground floor, except that the balustrade of the dome is covered with beautiful and sophisticated blue glazed tile decorations. Typical architecture is the domes used to cover the sun and rain. It is “Arcades”, an important element of Western colonial style architecture in Taiwan.
