1. Exploring the History of the Truc Lam Zen sect

The Truc Lam Zen sect, founded during the Tran Dynasty by King Tran Nhan Tong, embodies a deep spirit of engagement with the world. The Truc Lam Zen sect boasts three outstanding Zen masters: Nhan Tong (Truc Lam Dau Da), Phap Loa, and Huyen Quang, collectively known as the Truc Lam Tam To. This school is regarded as both a continuation and a unification of three Vietnamese Zen traditions from the 12th century. By founding the Truc Lam School, King Tran Nhan Tong unified earlier Zen sects and the entire Tran Buddhist Church into one cohesive whole. The Truc Lam Zen sect, with its spirit of "entering the world," asserts that enlightenment is not about abandoning the world, but rather about living in harmony and engaging fully with society. King Tran Nhan Tong chose Yen Tu Mountain as his place of monastic life.

Although he renounced the throne, he remained concerned with the country's destiny and was ready to return to leadership to protect the nation. After his victories, he returned to monasticism and spread the Dharma. This spirit of engagement created national strength in the 13th and 14th centuries and helped Buddhism flourish in Vietnam.

The Truc Lam Zen sect not only focuses on spiritual practice but also emphasizes nation-building and social development through Buddhist compassion, wisdom, and ethics. Through many ups and downs, by the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu and other Zen masters revived and developed the Truc Lam school, building many monasteries throughout the country and making significant contributions to the development of the nation and Buddhism.

The Truc Lam Zen Monastery in Tra Vinh, inaugurated in 2016, is not only a place of practice but also deeply connected with the life and destiny of the nation. It is also an important highlight in the revival of this Zen sect in the South.

2. Unique Architecture and Spirituality

The monastery covers 7 hectares and features architecture from the Ly-Tran periods, with two-tiered tiled roofs and graceful eaves, evoking a sense of humility and harmony with nature. Upon entering the main gate, visitors step into a tranquil space. The 150-meter-long corridor leading to the main hall is not just a physical path but also a journey to leave behind worries and seek serenity.

The main hall of Truc Lam Zen Monastery in Tra Vinh, measuring 27 x 45 meters and standing 11 meters tall, is the largest main hall in the province. Built on a 1.4-meter-high stone base, the temple stands out with its majestic tiled roof, visible from the sea about 10 km away.

The main hall is an impressive structure with an imported ironwood frame and a 3.5-meter-tall, 3-ton Buddha statue, cast in Hue. Notably, the Buddha statue is in the "Niem Hoa Vi Tieu" pose, where the Buddha holds a lotus, and Ananda is smiling—this distinctive feature carries a profound message about awakening and inner peace.

A key highlight of the monastery is the 31-meter-tall statue of the Bodhisattva Quan The Am, which faces the East Sea, acting as a protective deity for the coastal people. Visitors are invited to take time to listen to the story of the thousand-armed, thousand-eyed Buddha and feel the protection and peace when standing beneath the statue's base.

Truc Lam Zen Monastery holds several records among Buddhist temples in Tra Vinh, including being the closest to the East Sea, having the most traditional architecture, the largest main hall, the largest Buddha statue, the largest Quan The Am statue, the largest bell, the largest lecture hall, and the largest front courtyard.

3. Exploring the "Entering the World" Philosophy of Truc Lam Zen

Unlike traditional temples, Truc Lam Zen Monastery also enshrines statues of the Martial Marquis Le - Nguyen Huu Canh and Mother Au Co—symbols of national spirit and gratitude to the origins. In the back of the monastery, the three Truc Lam Tam To—King Buddha Tran Nhan Tong, Phap Loa, and Huyen Quang—are revered alongside Bodhidharma and other great Vietnamese monks who contributed to both the Dharma and society. This clearly reflects the "entering the world" philosophy of the Truc Lam Zen sect, which connects spirituality with daily life, and intertwines the spiritual and cultural heritage of Vietnam.

4. Enjoying the Breathtaking Landscape

Not only a pilgrimage site, the monastery is also an ideal place to relax and immerse in nature. The refreshing green landscape, with rows of wind-breaking pine trees, expansive grassy fields, and the vast East Sea before you, will help visitors shake off all stress.

5. Connecting with Nearby Attractions

After visiting the monastery, guests can explore the Ba Dong Beach tourism area, the Cao Dynamic Stone Village, or admire modern industrial projects like the Hau River channel for sea-going vessels. These destinations will enhance and enrich your journey of discovering Tra Vinh.
