Anyone who has visited Bac Lieu cannot forget the distinctive images of this region: Hắc Công Tử, the Bird Sanctuary, Bac Lieu longan, and historical figures such as Cao Triều Phát—the patriotic intellectual—and Cao Văn Lầu, the composer who created the genre of vọng cổ. Đồng Nọc Nạng is also an important milestone in the struggle of farmers against French colonialism. However, it would be remiss not to wander through the Vĩnh Hưng Ancient Tower—an architectural masterpiece of the Khmer, considered the oldest national monument today.

The Vĩnh Hưng Ancient Tower, located in Vĩnh Hưng Commune, Vĩnh Lợi District, is about 20 kilometers northwest of Bac Lieu City. It has stood for centuries under various names such as Trà Long Tower and Lục Hiền Tower, named after the two monks who preserved the site. Today, it is best known as the Vĩnh Hưng Ancient Tower, standing proudly amidst nature.

To reach the tower, you can choose to travel by car or boat. If driving, follow the Cầu Sập – Vĩnh Hưng route and turn left after 2 kilometers to arrive. If you choose to go by boat, you will enjoy the scenic beauty of Bac Lieu's waterways, with lush trees and golden rice fields. The journey to the tower is not just a trip; it is also an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the natural surroundings of the Mekong Delta.

Upon arrival, the tower appears as a standing cylinder, its exterior covered in moss and weathered bricks. The architecture reflects the unique brick-making techniques of the Khmer, setting it apart from modern constructions. Unlike today’s use of cement or mortar, ancient builders used plant-based binders—an aspect that modern scientists still cannot explain convincingly.

The Vĩnh Hưng Ancient Tower is not only an architectural structure but also an attractive site with fresh air, the scent of wildflowers, and fertile rice fields surrounding it. Outside the tower, you can find many colorful ceramic fragments, remnants of the rich culture from the Oc Eo civilization. These valuable relics contain much information about the past, showcasing the cultural development of the Southwest region.

Dating back to 892 AD, the Vĩnh Hưng Ancient Tower is not just an architectural heritage but also a place of worship for the local people. On August 4, 1992, the Ministry of Culture and Information issued decision No. 983 recognizing the tower as a national heritage site. Visiting the Vĩnh Hưng Ancient Tower allows you to not only admire its ancient beauty but also delve deeper into the history and culture of the Khmer people, along with the valuable heritage preserved here. Let your visit to the Vĩnh Hưng Ancient Tower become an essential part of your exploration journey in Bac Lieu.
