Nestled in a domed courtyard in District V, PALOMA is a designer pavilion that brings together around 50 local manufacturers and designers. The house was built in 1894, by János Wagner, who founded a prestigious architectural dynasty. The building, known for its eclectic style and impressive interior archways, was originally intended as a townhouse for the Wagner extended family.
In the 1990s, the ground floor and first floor were taken over by the newly established PALOMA Shopping Center, which had enjoyed many years of success as a popular shopping destination. However, the emergence of giant shopping malls in the following years ended the fate of downtown shopping stores; stores in PALOMA eventually moved or closed and the decaying building's retail spaces emptied for more than a decade.
In May 2014, a group of young artists persuaded the District V. government to support the establishment of a new cultural project on the abandoned bottom floors of the building. Part of the deal was the rebuilding of the central staircase, which is now considered the main decoration of the house. Still operating under the PALOMA name, the courtyard now houses concept stores, galleries and tailoring workshops on the ground and first floors. The apartments on the upper floors are private property.
PALOMA Artist Courtyard is a communal gallery space that aims to promote contemporary Hungarian design and arts and crafts, and showcases the works of various fashion designers and craft artists. emerging industry. In addition, at PALOMA, shoppers can meet designers in person in their stores. This place attracts many young people and those who want to start the path of art and fashion.
The row of shops above the stairs leads to the first floor, where there is a wide selection of clothes, jewelry, bags, shoes and more crafts.
