Profile
The Spire of Dublin, also known as the Monument of Light, is a 120-meter (393-foot) high stainless steel needle-shaped monument located on O'Connell Street in Dublin, Ireland. The monument was officially inaugurated in January 2002 and designed by Ian Ritchie Architects, as part of a street redevelopment project.
The Spire is made up of a tapered steel shaft from a base diameter of 3 meters (9.8 feet) to a tip diameter of 15 centimeters (5.9 inches). The structure is fixed to the ground by a platform anchored to the rock base. The entire structure is coated with a highly reflective stainless steel layer, giving it a shiny appearance and is visible from a distance.
The Spire was designed to be an iconic, modern addition to Dublin's cityscape and to highlight the redevelopment of O'Connell Street, a 20th-century rundown street. Spire's design was inspired by the idea of a "beam of light" and the monument is intended to symbolize Dublin's historical and cultural heritage, as well as the city's aspirations for the future.
The Spire has become a popular tourist attraction in Dublin and is often included on guided tours of the city. It is also a popular spot for photography, especially at night when illuminated. The Spire is surrounded by a number of other notable landmarks and attractions, such as the General Post Office, the shopping district of Henry Street, and the Temple Bar neighborhood.
Spire is also controversial, as some locals and critics have criticized the cost of the monument and its location on O'Connell Street. Some for the government can better spend on other public projects, while others feel that Spire doesn't fit in a historic midtown location. However, despite these criticisms, the Spire has become a recognizable symbol of Dublin and a popular tourist destination.
