Profile
Before World War II, when bombings and destruction took place, Nuremberg was one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. After a period of construction and restoration over many decades, the city today has almost regained its original beauty. In winter, Nuremberg hosts a very popular and charming Christmas market in the Bavarian region.
Nuremberg has been an important place many times in German history: once the cradle of the German Renaissance, later one of the centers of the Third Reich (Nazi Germany). It was in Nuremberg that the law denying German citizenship to Jews was passed. When World War II ended, the Nuremberg trials took place (from 1945 to 1949, a total of 13 trials). One of the darkest chapters of German history was publicly discussed here, leading to massive punishments for the regime's leaders. Today, the Nuremberg trials are considered a milestone in the creation of a permanent international tribunal, which deals with topics such as genocide and other crimes against humanity.
Visit Nuremberg by walking down beautiful streets lined with quaint half-timbered houses. The imposing city walls divide Nuremberg Old Town from the town's guest areas.
Where to eat? Gastsätte Trödelstuben is a traditional food restaurant with a lovely courtyard where diners can enjoy the afternoon sun on clear days.
Travel time from Munich to Nuremberg is 90 minutes by train.
