As the first Christian mosque built in the Indian capital, St. James is one of the oldest churches in Delhi, and despite being located in the bustling district of Kashmiri Gate, the church has a peaceful and quiet atmosphere, attracting visitors from all over the region.

St James's Church was built in 1836 by Colonel James Skinner. It is believed that the colonel swore to build a church while he was lying wounded on the battlefield. Hence the church is also known as the Skinner Church.

St James's Church was built by James Skinner himself. However, the architectural design of the church was given by Major Robert Smith. Built on a cross-shaped foundation, the church boasts a basic Renaissance architectural design with three entrance gates, an octagonal central dome, a circular space below, and stained-glass windows. above the altar. Other notable features are a crucifix hanging from the top and a bronze sphere, both of which are said to have been inspired by the sides of a church in Venice. However, during the uprising of 1857, both the bronze ball and the cross were damaged and were later replaced.

The church complex is surrounded by lush, manicured lawns, creating an extremely peaceful and relaxing space. The lawns, which can accommodate up to 1,200 people at a time, are used for baptisms, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and thanksgivings… Although on weekdays, the church does not receive gatherings. It is crowded with devotees, however, a number of tourists still come to visit every day. Unlike weekdays, Sundays are always crowded with pilgrims, mainly members of the Church. In addition, festivals such as Christmas, Easter and Palm Sunday are celebrated with great pomp. The church also organizes catechism classes for children on Sundays.

Currently, the Church of St. James serves as an important religious center for members of the Christian community. The church was also visited by many important figures, including the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1961, Justin Welby in 2015 - the current Archbishop of Canterbur...

One can visit St James's church at any time of the year. However, Christmas time is considered the best time to visit because during this time the church receives a large number of visitors and the festival is celebrated in a very special way.

Opening hours of the Church of St. James changes with the seasons. In summer (April to September), service time starts from 8:30am, and from 9am in winter (October to March).
