Profile
Bandra Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1640 AD. They built it to watch over the Gulf of Mahim, Worli and other nearby areas of the Arabian Sea. Cannons and guns were placed to protect the Port of Mumbai from invaders arriving via the northern sea route.
But the British rulers destroyed the fort later, in the early 18th century. They did so to prevent the burgeoning Maratha empire from gaining control of the fort and using it as a base to attack the citadel. city. Despite this, the Marathas captured the fort in 1739 AD. And they held it until the First Anglo-Maratha War in 1774 AD, after which the British regained possession.
Recently, in 2003, the dilapidated Bandra Fort was preserved and repaired in many places, creating the peaceful tourist spot it is today.
The fortress is built in European style, and it has a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea. This structure is 24 m high above sea level to prevent flooding during high tide at sea. The fortress is built of granite blocks and the main gateway has arched columns. Walls have space to aim and fire cannons or guns at incoming enemies. Today, however, one of its standout attractions is the boardwalk to the Arabian Sea, and the seating area to enjoy the view.
More than the structure, however, is the view of Bandra Fort, which attracts tourists and locals alike for its Arabian sea views. Visitors can wander in the ruins, especially for those who are passionate about history and architecture. This is also a great place for many photographers, a favorite place to capture sunsets and waves.
Bandra Fort also has a park next to the building. Surrounded by palm trees and packed with benches, it acts as the perfect place to relax and get through a tiring day. Many people come here to meditate, exercise and walk among the trees listening to the sound of the waves.
Guests can also visit the Bandra Fort Amphitheater. It occasionally hosts various concerts. And visitors can also witness the filming in Bandra Fort. This is a favorite location for many Indian movie scenes.
