The Istanbul International Film Festival is a 12-day film festival organized by the Istanbul Arts and Culture Foundation (IKSV). The Istanbul International Film Festival is the first and oldest international film festival in Turkey, held annually by the Istanbul Arts and Culture Foundation in April in cinemas in Istanbul. The Istanbul International Film Festival was first held in 1982, within the framework of the Istanbul International Film Festival as a "Film Week" consisting of six films. The theme of the films participating in the Festival is limited to "Art and Cinema", in order to keep the event within the rules of the Istanbul International Film Festival. In 1983, this event was held for the second time with the name "Istanbul Film Days", which took place over the course of a month.

Starting in 1984, the event became a separate activity; it was moved to April. In 1985, two competitions were added to the festival: the domestic film competition and the international film competition. From 1987 on, the "Cinema Honor Award" began to be awarded.

In the following years, the Istanbul International Film Festival has affirmed its position and occupies an important position among the major film festivals in the world with the large number of films shown and the quality as well. as program flexibility.

In early 1989, the event was recognized by the International Federation of Associations of Film Producers (FIAPF) as a "Competitive Specialized Festival". Parallel to this development, "Istanbul Filmdays" was renamed "Istanbul International Film Festival".

Starting in 1996, the "Lifetime Achievement Award" along with the "Cinema Honor Award" began to be presented to international film producers and actors.

In 2006, celebrating its 25th anniversary, the festival organized a meeting for Turkish and European film experts titled "Meeting on the Bridge" with the aim of bringing European film organizations approached Turkish directors and producers and discussed funding possibilities.

Since the beginning of the Festival, a total of 2,065,000 spectators have attended screenings of 2,330 films from 72 different countries (2005 figures). The festival boasted 170,000 spectators in 2007, breaking its own record.
