“Like a crown atop Castle Hill, Buda Castle is an architectural masterpiece, with Renaissance ruins surrounding the foundations, a Habsburg Neoclassical facade, and a harsh communist-style interior.”

The majestic Buda Castle atop Castle Hill in Budapest offers views of the beautiful Danube river. It was once the residence of Hungarian kings; today, the castle complex houses the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, and the Széchenyi National Library. The foundations of today's castle were built in the 14th century. The castle was later besieged more than 30 times and underwent significant stylistic changes, renovations and reconstruction throughout the years.

Dominate the cityscape with Habsburg-era grandeur and recreated green domes (the original roof was damaged during World War II). From the terrace of the castle, sweeping views across the Chain Bridge, the Hungarian Parliament and the rooftops of Pest always leave visitors in awe.

The main structure of Buda Castle (also known as the Royal Palace), is a massive Neo-Baroque style building. The interior includes several reconstructed medieval rooms and is home to a museum and library. The Budapest History Museum, located in the south wing, presents the history of Budapest from its beginnings to the modern era. The Hungarian National Gallery displays Hungarian art from the 11th century to the present. The Széchenyi National Library houses a collection of rare books.

The Castle District and Buda Castle are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The castle and its surroundings are steeped in culture and history. Visitors can enjoy the surroundings on foot or take a guided tour for a closer look at the castle. The castle can be reached on foot, by bus or by the famous cable car, from the Széchenyi Bridge.
