Canale Grande is Venice's Main canal. This canal is the last part of the northern tributary of the Brenta River, which runs through the city, which is why unlike the other canals, the main canal is always flowing.

Venice has hundreds of canals connecting the different islands that make up the city - the largest of which is the Canale Grande.

This monumental canal resembles a river and it goes from one side of Venice to the other and winds through the center in a big S shape.

More than 170 buildings dating from the early 13th century line the banks of the canal and it has served as an important waterway in the city for hundreds of years.

There are only four bridges across the large canal because in general residents and tourists travel along the canal by boat, not across the bridge.

Visitors might consider walking along sections of the canal, admiring the buildings that line it and witnessing Venice's busy waterways.
