Prior to 2004, all long-distance trains serving Seoul had their final destinations near Seoul Station, but with the opening of the Korea Express Train (KTX), Yongsan Station accepts some Seoul services.

On February 28, 2012, ITX train service opened between this station and Chuncheon Station on the Gyeongchun Line.

Yongsan Station operates on Line 1 and Jungang Line on the Seoul Subway.

In 2004, a large cinema opened next to the station. In August 2006, the entire station building was transformed into a large shopping mall, called I'Park Mall. The existing building includes a railway station, a metro station, a CGV cinema, a restaurant and a shop. There is a bridge connecting I'Park Mall and Yongsan Electronic Market. On floors B-1 and B-2 there is a large E-Mart along with food court and Burger King restaurant. Upstairs there are many restaurants including: Uno Chicago Grill, KFC, Lotteria, California Pizza Kitchen, Pizza Hut, and many Korean and Japanese restaurants. You can find Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, and Baskin Robbins. A duty free shop managed by HDC Shilla opened in 2016.

The station is planned to become a conversion station of the Shinbundang Line by 2025. Once Shinbundang Station is operational, Yongsan Station will become the connection point with Sinyongsan Station on Line 4.
