Seongsan Ilchul-deck Peak, located on an extinct volcano, majestic 180m high, shaped like a giant spout, is one of Jeju-do's most impressive sights and a World Heritage Site of Unesco. Coming here to watch the sunrise is an interesting experience

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, 180m above sea level, erupted on the ocean floor about 5,000 years ago, which makes it a very rare case among the many craters in Jejudo Island. A scene from the movie 'Lee Chang-ho's Baseball Team' (directed by Lee Chang-ho) was filmed here. Although people used to farm in this area, it is now a natural habitat for the locals. 200 kinds of vegetation such as silver grass, vines, Pseudosasa japonica, and giant angelica as well as the natural habitat of many kinds of wildlife.

At the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong, you will set foot on a forested crater surrounded by jagged rocks, although there is no lake because of the porous rock. From the entrance, climbing the steep steps to the crater rim takes only 20 minutes. Being on time to catch the sunrise is a life-affirming journey for many Koreans.
To do the sunrise expedition, you'll have to spend the night in Seongsan-ri, a peaceful village filled with guesthouses and restaurants catering to the hiking crowd. The steps up the volcano are easy and clear, but if you're nervous, bring a torch. Not an early riser? This is also a popular daytime hiking activity. Seongsan Sunrise Festival, a New Year's Eve party, is held here on December 31 every year.
