Profile
Torcello was once the most important and populous island in the Venice lagoon, with more than 20,000 inhabitants. The mainland population fled to the swampy islands when the Lombards and Huns invaded northern Italy. It remained sublime for about a century and then was hit by a bout of malaria which decimated the population and power was transferred to Venice.
Going to Torcello will remind you of the first scenes of The Godfather Part II (for those who have seen the movie): a very rural and decaying setting, with a few souvenir shops that liven up the area. It really is like going back in time.
One of Torcello's highlights is the Attila's Throne , which is an antique chair made of stone. It is located in the main square of the town and it is believed that this chair was used by Attila, King of the Huns.
Torcello Church
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the oldest building in the Venice lagoon. Its interior features notable Byzantine mosaics from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This impressive temple was founded in 639 and it still preserves a ninth-century archway with arches.
If you want a good view of the Lagoon and maybe take a few photos of the landscape, we recommend climbing to the top of the bell tower. You can also visit the Basilica Museum. Next to the Basilica is the church of Santa Fosca, surrounded by a pentagonal archway.
These are the easiest ways to get to Torcello from Venice:
Public Transport: The LN water bus line runs from Fondamenta Nuovo or San Zaccaria to Torcello and the journey takes about 50 minutes. It will take 5 minutes if you take the steam train from Burano.
