Profile
From 1882 to 1893, Iolahi Palace was the official residence of the last two kings of the Kingdom of Hawaii: King Kalakaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani.
The castle was built by King David Kalakaua with the name "The Merrie Monarch" (roughly translated as Happy Royal), as a promise to the kingdom of Hawaii. Influenced by European architecture, this royal residence includes an electric lighting system, an indoor telephone and the first modern toilet in Hawaii. The interior is lavishly decorated with koa-style staircases, portraits of the Hawaiian Royal Family, and elaborately crafted furniture and items from around the world.
After the overthrow of the Hawaiian royal family in 1893, Hawaii became a territory of the United States of America in 1898, and then the 50th state of the United States in 1959. During this time, the Iolani Palace was used as a State House. Parliament until 1968. The castle was opened to the public in 1978.
The tour here will lead visitors through the main room in the American style - Florence; the banquet hall, where grand gala dinners were held in the past; separate residence of the royal family and hear the story of Queen Liliuokalani's imprisoned life after her overthrow. In addition, visitors can also explore many royal artifacts such as swords, jewelry and crowns.
Iolani Palace is ideally located within walking distance to other attractions, such as the Statue of King Kamehameha I at Aliiolani Hale, Parliament Building, Historic Hawaiahao Church, Honolulu Hale, Museum of Fine Arts State of Hawaii... In addition, Iolani Palace is also located near Oahu's main financial and artistic district, and Chinatown.
