“Germany’s oldest museum, which houses thousands of paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings spanning over 700 years of art history”

Frankfurt has about 60 museums of different sizes and collections, 13 of which are located on the Main river and are called Museumsufer or Museum along the river. Here is located the Städel museum, where an extensive art collection calls this beautiful structure home.

The Städel is Germany's oldest foundation museum, boasting a European collection spanning some 700 years of works from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods to the present. Contemporary works of art are housed in the museum's extension in the spacious white underground (it cost 52 million euros to build) under the museum's gardens, where visitors can admire the silk screen 1982 by Andy Warhol sketches the portrait of the famous Frankfurt-born German writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
