Profile
Founded in Antalya near the ancient harbor of Kaleiçi four years ago, the Antalya Toy Museum has more than 1,500 toys purchased from antique auctions around the world. Toys were made shortly after the Industrial Revolution in the United States, Germany, and Japan, and authentic handmade toys from Anatolia are on display in the museum. The oldest toy in the museum dates back to the 1800s.
In his statement to the Anadolu Agency (AA), Antalya Toy Museum Director Saliha Özdemir İpek said more than 160,000 people have visited the museum in the past four years. She added that the museum is not just for children, but it also takes adults on a journey back in time. Elderly people who visit the museum have an emotional time, says İpek: “Adults and seniors love to visit our museum, they are also sad to leave.”
The museum also welcomes visitors from all over the world, İpek said that people from other countries are often shocked to see toys unique to their homeland. The toys on display in the museum are a landmark in Europe's toy history. These toys can also be found in the most prestigious toy museums in Europe. The toys contained in the Antalya Toy Museum are precious and important because they reflect time and the historical past.
The museum also organizes workshops that enrich children's imagination, along with reading sessions and book signings for children. Sometimes it can be difficult for the kids to leave the museum once they enter. There are visitors who come here with their children and actually they secretly thank the children for drawing them to the museum, but they themselves also have happy thoughts and feelings when viewing the artifacts here. . The museum brought them back to their childhood when looking at the toys on display here.
The Antalya Toy Museum is not the only toy museum in Turkey. The museum is a place to build a bridge between the past and the present, in order to preserve and cherish children's culture and leave it to future generations. Visiting a toy museum contributes to children's physical and mental development, as they relate objects to themselves, while adults can show children the toys they have been playing with childhood.
