Profile
With its Cathedral, Baptistery and bell tower, Piazza del Duomo together with Ponte Vecchio is the most famous iconic image in all of Florence.
Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) should be the first and last stop when visiting Florence. The square features the city cathedral, the city, monuments and parades, all of which make up Florence's most famous landmarks, along with the Ponte Vecchio.
If Piazza della Signoria is considered a symbol of Florence's civic life, it is undoubtedly the religious and spiritual center of the city.
One of the most distinctive parts of the square is located at the intersection of Via dei Calzaioli with Piazza del Duomo. Here is found the Loggia del Bigallo, a fourteenth-century structure for the Compagnia della Misericordia (Company of Mercy), one of Florence's oldest fraternities, a shelter for afflicted children. abandoned and orphaned.
The Museum dell'Opera del Duomo is located to the east of the Duomo. This museum features, among many other interesting works of art, the original sculptures that once graced the Piazza del Duomo.
