The complex spans an area of ​​6,226 hectares in the Trang An limestone massif, and is surrounded by a large buffer zone of 6,026 hectares, mainly of rural land and rice fields. This is home to about 14,500 residents, most of their income is based on agriculture and wet rice cultivation.

Trang An possesses a set of majestic and prominent humid tropical limestone karst landscapes in the last stage of geological evolution with various shapes and a connected network of closed depressions. by a complex system of underground waterways accessible only by small boats.
